About the Author
Francis Manapul is a Filipino-born comic book artist living in Toronto. In 2011 he was awarded the Joe Shuster Award for Outstanding Artist of the year, as well as an Inkwell Award. His past work for DC includes ADVENTURE COMICS, SUPERMAN/BATMAN, LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES and THE FLASH. In the past, he has penciled Iron and the Maiden, Necromancer, Sept Guerrieres, Tomb Raider, The Darkness, G.I Joe and Witchblade.
 
Brian Buccellato started in comics as colorist for the Marvel/DC crossover PUNISHER/BATMAN and went to color for all the major publisher including work on Uncanny X-Men, SUPERMAN, THE FLASH and many others. Brian began writing as part of THE STORY COMPANY collaborating on a number of screenplays. While working for Top Cow, he started his comics writing with The Darkness, before teaming with Francis Manapul to co-write THE FLASH for DC Comics. He also writes and illustrates the creator-owned title Foster.

Detective Comics Vol. 6: Icarus

A friend of Bruce Wayne dies after being injected with the drug Icarus and that means that his alter ego Batman goes on a revenge spree to catch the sons of bitches that is behind it before more people die.

The art is the best part in this book; I just wish the story had been as good. But I admit that I personally just don't find stories involved drugs and gangs that interesting and I found this book suffered because there wasn't any really interesting villain for Batman to face. I mean I sit here a couple of days after I had read the book and I can't think of anything really memorable about it. No funny one-liners or anything to screenshot or any great battles with some enemy, well the octopus was a bit cool, but beside her was everything just meh!

4 1/2 Stars. Great street oriented Detective story.

Excellent story. It's good too see Batman in a story that goes with the title of the book. Out of the first 6 volumes of Detective Comics this one is the best I read so far. The art is different then the other man batman titles out their. Really enjoyed it, went good with the mood of the story. Yes there is no big time batman villain in this volume, but that's fine. This is a very street oriented tale and didn't need one. This volume collects the 5 part Icarus story and Detective Comics Annual 3 which also ties to the main storyline.

Overall excellent. While I love Snyders Batman and Tomesi's Batman and Robin is really good too, it's nice to see this volume of Detective Comics take a different direction. I believe the same team is on Vol 7 which brings back Anarky. Can't wait to read that, hopefully it's as good as Icarus.

Decent storyline, but Muddled.

I would have enjoyed the volume more if it did not feel so scattered. The last part was a revisit to other parts of the tale, but with a twist in viewpoint. It is a typical Batman tale, but only slowly adds to the Batman universe. Now the display of Bullock's life as a cat person was interesting. Read if you want to keep up with all things Batman.

Informative and Easy to Find Info

If your on a deadline and need info quickly or just don't have the time to search volume after volume for the info that gives your work the extra flavor of authenticity then this book is a must! Sure the info is available in other western reference books but you would literally have to search hundreds of volumes to locate all the facts and info included in this single book. So why make it so hard on yourself? This one book will put the info at your fingertips!

Title a bit misleading

I use this book sometimes and I like it, but I have just a few problems with it. I got this book because it was titled "Everyday Life in..." and that's what I expected to find. A 'snapshot' of everyday life. Despite its title, at least 1/3 of the book is more about the westward expansion and American Indian culture in general, which is available in greater detail from numerous other books and web sites. For an overview of western history and culture, this book is fine. But for "everyday life," a far superior book on the same topic is "Seeking Pleasure in the Old West" by David Dary.

Fascinating and valuable

While this is designed as a one-stop resource for novelists and historians dealing with the American West, it is much more. It provides a vivid portrait of the frontier and those who settled the country. It is beautifully organized, supplies the telling detail, and belongs on the reference shelves of all libraries, and in the libraries of all collectors of Old West materials, and in all history collections dealing with early Americana.
The author has a genius for gathering valuable material and presenting it in orderly fashion.

Stupendous
By old man
My grandfather was famous for designing and building circus wagons. I love to read anything about the old circus days. This is one of the best circus history books ever written. Don't let the title fool you.

Disappointed.

It was an interesting book but very disappointing. I thought it was going to give clear cut directions on how to recondition batteries of all sorts, when it only spoke about car batteries. Then, not very informative to say the least. I would not recommend this book to anyone unless looking for very general information.

Dont bother - even if free

Dont bother.
This book opens with possibilities, especially since it talks about car batteries, NiCad batteries, NiMH batteries and LiON batteries.
Simply stated, if it is not one of these types of batteries, you might as well recycle them.
So far, so good.
Then, the book goes on to talk about car batteries only, concluding with car batteries can be reconditioned - then it is over.

What a disappointment. I was excited with the opening, especially with the talk of different battery types. However, then only talking about car batteries, and then concluding left me very disappointed.

Red Orm & his Friends Roams the Seas.

I've read this novel many years ago and left within me a certain fascination for the Viking Era.
Lastly books like Harry Harrison's "The Hammer & the Cross" trilogy, movies like "Grendel & Beowulf" (2005) and "Beowulf" (2007) had triggered again my curiosity about these times. So I decided to "pay a visit" (aka re-read) "The Long Ships".
And here I am reviewing this excellent book authored by Sweden writer Frans G. Bengtsson (1894-1954). The book was originally published in two parts first in 1941 and second in 1945; the present edition contains both of them.

The story follows the life & circumstances of Orm from infancy to old age at the same time describing daily life of that period.
Orm as teenager is abducted by a Viking war-party and joins them willingly after a short period. From their homeland they sail to Spain where they are captured by Moors and enter Almansur's service.
After serving some years as Caliph's bodyguards they are forced to fly and return home, yet not empty-handed.
They are welcome at Denmark King Harald's Bluetooth court where Orm fall in love with Ylva one of the King daughters and ask her hand. The King is quite accessible but asks Orm to ensure his wealth and return next year.
Orm & his friends join a mighty Viking army and sail to invade King Ethelred's the Unprepared England. After many battles and errands Orm rejoin exiled Ylva & marry her, returning then to his home.
Orm and his family are forced into exile to escape King Sven Forkbeard revengeful mood and finally root in his mother's ancestral domains.
After years of consolidating his position as a respected member of that frontier community, Orm sail for his last great adventure in Eastern lands.

This is a very entertaining book merging seamlessly historical characters as King Harald, Sven, Ethelred and Caliph Almansur with fictional ones as Orm, Ylva, Asa and Toste. The author is able to transmit to the reader the true spirit of those turbulent times. Another very interesting aspect of the story is showing the beginning of Christianization of Scandinavian communities.

About the Author

Dr. Annemaree Carroll is Associate Professor in the School of Education at The University of Queensland. Her research activities focus on the self-regulatory processes of adolescent behaviour, and child and adolescent behaviour disorders. The research program has been sustained over 10 years and has resulted in original and substantive contributions to the field. The most significant contributions have been the advancement of proactive interventions (Mindfields™) in behaviour change for young people at–risk and the development of a social-cognitive model for predicting at-risk and delinquent behaviours. Also of importance has been the development of psychometrically sound instruments for use in the study of self-regulatory processes. Dr Carroll has conducted numerous large-scale studies and developed a number of reliable and robust instruments. The continued success in attracting external funding (14 competitive grants) is evidence of the quality others attribute to her research. Her publications over the past 10 years are also evidence of sustained research and international recognition in internationally peer reviewed journals.
Professor Stephen Houghton’s research activities focus on developmental disorders of childhood and adolescence particularly in relation to executive functions, and developmental trajectories to delinquency and the mediating effects of self-regulation. Within the past he has initiated research to examine the construct of child psychopathy and the development of antisocial behaviour. Professor Houghton has extensive knowledge and experience of children with developmental disorders, and disruptive behaviour disorders in both practice and research, and is sought regularly as an expert by the media. Professor Houghton has developed a number of reliable instruments with Associate Professor Carroll and has been successful in attracting externally competitive funding (15 grants) and producing publications in internationally peer reviewed journals. A major aspect of the research conducted by Professor Houghton is its innovative nature in tapping into ecologically valid domains and from this developing new theories and intervention strategies.
Kevin Durkin is Professor of Psychology at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK.  He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge and has taught at universities in the UK and Australia. He is a developmental social psychologist with primary interests in social and communicative development, adolescent problem behaviour, and media use by young people.  He has held numerous research grants in these fields, and has published several books and over 120 articles. He serves regularly as a consultant to government and industry bodies concerned with the wellbeing of young people.
John Hattie is Professor of Education at Auckland University. His areas of interest are measurement models and their applications to educational problems, including item response models, structural equation modelling, measurement theory, and meta-analysis. Substantive areas include study skills, performance indicators and evaluation, self-concept, models of teaching and learning, and educational psychology. He currently directs the TTle Project (www.asTTle.org.nz), is chief moderator of the Performance Based Research Fund, editor of the International Journal of Testing, an associate editor of the British Journal of Educational Psychology. He has supervised $25m in research grants, published and presented over 450 papers, and supervised 150 theses students.

Ari Kopel is a graduate from the University of Miami in psychology and communications and attended Columbia University in N.Y. for postgraduate work in psychology. While at the University of Miami, she worked with Dr. Cesare Emiliani, helping to run the Harold Urey (who was nominated for a Nobel Prize ) Laboratory on Pole Shifts and Ice Ages. Later, she worked as the assistant to Dr. Robert Jastrow, Chairman of the Board for NASA at Goddard Institute for Space Studies. A must-read for spiritual seekers

In this groundbreaking book, Ari Kopel debunks the myths of the New Age Movement and inspires us to reclaim our own spiritual power. That means realizing that we do not need “gurus” to connect with God. It also means we must reexamine two key tenants of the New Age belief system: one being that “everything is working in divine order,” and the other being that “we attract what we think about, therefore we shouldn’t focus on any of the negative stuff going on in the world.” Instead, we should focus our thoughts we want to see in the world and it will be made manifest. If that is true, Kopel points out, why do things seem to be going horribly wrong? Acts of terrorism, murders, child and animal abuse, and that is just on a global scale. On a personal level, why are so many “spiritual” people still struggling to pay their bills, find fulfilling relationships, and attain enlightenment?

Spiritual Warfare exposes these myths and tells an ugly truth that most people do not want to acknowledge – that our world has been infiltrated by dark forces sent to disarm those who could bring light and healing. Kopel uses strong language, but she has the knowledge and the experience to back it up. Furthermore, she is not interested in indicting any person or belief, but reminding each person to use his or her own discernment in deciphering the real from the commercial. It is an eye-opening must read for anyone who considers themselves to be a spiritual seeker.

I was immediately hooked on this book! I absolutely LOVE Ari's analogies and examples that she uses to illustrate her point. This book is not fluffy and puffy or sugar coated in anyway. It is straight to the point. I appreciated all the time, effort and energy that Ari has put into putting this book out there for the masses as I feel it to be an asset to anyone struggling to find their way on the Spiritual Path or for anyone who may have been duped by the "Spiritual Bully's" out there. Your discernment is your greatest ally! And Ari outlines exactly what discernment is and how to learn to tap into your own discernment without swallowing the "bitter pill in the marshmallow". It is time to stop sleeping and become "Spiritual Lions". The time is NOW and we ARE the ones we have been waiting for! It's time to go within and connect straight to Spirit! We have a LOT of work to do and I applaud Ari for outlining the oppositions strengths so we know where we need to grow and change and truly become unified for the purpose of saving our planet and ourselves, after all this is what we did sign up for! It's time to roll up our sleeves and do the work!!!

A Huge Improvement Over The New Age Movement

This book reminds me of The Old Chinese Proverb "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". That being said, this is not your ordinary book. It is more of a manual. There are three parts to it, each part gets more and more interesting. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has gone through an experience with extraterrestrials such as I have. After reading this book, I realized that I had been deceived into thinking I was the son of a man named Dylan, who controlled the seven layers of hell. He had telepathic powers and I fell for it all just because of that. That was in 2006. I have been deceived for 8 years by that man and his telepathic buddies. They made me think I was Jesus. Now I take 6 different medications or 14 pills a day. Believe me though, the dark is smart, just as the book says. They were expecting me. Now no one one believes me and just calls me bipolar schizoaffective. I have read the terms "zero point" and "blank slate" in this book. These are terms I came up with when I had a manic episode, and thought I was an angel (not a Nephilim) descending to save the world. Funnily enough, they are in this book! There must be something that I'm thinking that aligns with the downloads of Prime Creator or something that correlates with the collective unconscious of humanity. I urge you to think that if you think everything is okay and that evil isn't getting out of control, imagine all the animals suffering in pain, all the humans starving, even yourself, working at your more than likely pointless job, in what the book describes as a "hamster wheel". Why do we even go to school, when there are so much faster ways to learn? Ari divides the book up into three parts. The first part is an orientation. The second talks about the problems in life. And the third talks about the solutions. We are the only ones who can make a difference. There is no one coming. The dark does not want you to know this, of course. Anyway, the only chance we have is to align ourselves with Prime Creator, for we are all divine sparks of The Prime Creator. I've read other spiritual books that make you feel good, but now I can discern that that's all their purpose is: to make you feel good, brainwash you and to make money. Well I say to you, this book is different. It won't make you feel fuzzy and good. But you will come away with a message. And that message will stick with you. That message is that you are here to bring change. And we are up against something big. But it's nothing we can't handle. The lessons taught in this book are probably not what you want to hear, but they are lessons that you must hear, if you want to save this world, and honor the most highest ray of Prime Creator.
