Another great read from MK Harkins!

Harkins has done it again! She’s given her readers a story about two people willing to risk their already-damaged hearts in order to give love one more try. It’s a familiar trope, because we’ve all been there, and we enjoy seeing how two young lovers find their way through. But Harkins offers more than romance in Taking Tiffany.

Sure, this book gives every romance reader exactly what they’re most desperate for, a stunning young couple on the cusp of love, and a front row seat to all that dares come between them, namely their own shattered hearts and the walls erected as a result. But, as they claw their way toward love and happiness, danger lurks for Todd and Tiffany, though they have no idea there’s an enemy nearby, let alone what’s about to happen to them.

As an avid reader of romantic suspense, I often see what’s coming on the horizon, but honestly, the big reveal at the end of Taking Tiffany floored me. I had no idea and couldn’t have possibly guessed who the mystery man was. That’s rare in this genre, so I applaud Ms. Harkins on stumping this savvy reader.

But this book offers so much more than that. As with her last book, Breaking Braydon, from which Tiffany and Todd were borne, there is much levity offered in the way of humor. Just at the right moment, the author tickles your funny bone, and you can’t help but giggle in relief. But that’s not to say there’s no angst. Believe me, there’s plenty of emotional turmoil here, not only between Todd and Tiffany, but also with Angela, a secondary arc leftover from Harkins’ last novel.

We came to despise Angela in Breaking Braydon, and rightfully so. She was entitled and meddlesome. And not much appears to have changed for her in Taking Tiffany, at least not at first. But the author soon takes you on Angela’s journey toward not just self-awareness, but toward redemption and atonement, though it’s not an easy odyssey. And while Angela wants nothing more than to return home to her life of ease and wealth, she soon confronts a war within her own soul and risks losing her defiantly reformed heart to not only the man who thwarts her at every turn, but the children she’s been forced to serve.

This book will touch you on so many levels with its heart and humor, its strength and message of perseverance in the face of loss and loneliness. Taking Tiffany wraps you in the arms of love, without rubbing your nose in what’s better left behind closed bedroom doors. It’s classy and dignified, fresh and resilient. And you are so gonna love it! A+, Ms. Harkins! Well done!

~ 5 Kept Me Guessing Stars ~

Talk about book full of lies, betrayal, mystery and suspense, but also had an amazing love story built into it too.

I am truly having a hard time writing this review and not because I didn't like the book, but because I LOVED it but I can't really tell you why because that would spoil the storyline. It is extremely hard to write a review that will do this book justice without giving any spoilers, but I am going to try.

This is the 4th book I have read by M.K. Harkins and I have to say her books just keep getting better. I really enjoyed this one because besides the really great love story between Todd and Tiffany we got a story that kept me guessing all the way through. Every time I thought I had it figured out, she would throw something at me and change my mind. I was happy in the end that I guessed some of the mystery, but she threw another curve ball at the end that added another element to the story. Her stories are too long but they move at the perfect pace. Nothing is ever rushed but there is never a time in the story that it drags either. Being that this book was told in Dual POV and different time frames, I thought the flow was perfect. Everything just worked well together and I liked how she told this story. My favorite part of this book has to be the epilogue. I thought she did a magnificent job wrapping up everyone's story and leaving the reader in a happy place :)

What I found intriguing about this book was it was kind of like we got 2 stories in one. This book is basically about Todd and Tiffany (Both characters from Breaking Braydon) but she also gave us Angela's story as well. She was also a character from Breaking Braydon who was the villain in that book. I was curious if she was going to be able to redeem Angela in this story after everything she did in the other book. I am not going to tell you if she did or not, you will just have to read the book.

Like I said before this book is about Tiffany and Todd. I loved their characters. They seemed to mesh well together. This was actually kind of like a friends to lovers story. Because Todd and Tiffany have been friends for over a year but during that time they have also been fighting feelings for each other, until one night one of them cracks and makes it known how they feel. You'll have to read the book to see who broke first ;) I thought both Todd and Tiffany were relatable and believable characters. You can't help but get sucked into their world and root for a HEA for them.

Taking Tiffany is a spin off from Breaking Braydon and I guess it can be read as a stand alone but my recommendation would be to read Breaking Braydon first and then this one. You meet Tiffany and Todd in book 1 and I think you get more of feeling of their characters by reading book 1 first. Plus you'll understand the dynamic of the other characters better. We do get to see a lot of Braydon, Jain and Colin in this book, so it would be nice to know their backstory as well.

So if you are a fan or are looking for a book that has an intriguing and captivating storyline and lovable characters and has the perfect mix of mystery, suspense, and romance, then this is the book to read. I think every reader should give this book a chance, there is something for all readers out there.

I really loved it!

This has quickly bumped up my favorite books list. I really loved it. Loved it so much, as soon as I finished, I went right back to the beginning to read it again!
Tiffany was adorable! Ditto for Todd. I loved them both! Their relationship was fun to read and they had so much chemistry! MK Harkins has no trouble creating cute and clever romance; she’s nailed it with Taking Tiffany. I felt like Todd and Tiffany were old friends of mine from the very beginning. I loved all the secondary characters too and now I can’t wait to go back and read Breaking Braydon, because, yes, I haven’t read Breaking Braydon yet, BUT that didn’t make it hard to get right into Taking Tiffany. I had no trouble keeping up with this story. It can definitely stand on its own without the prequel. MK Harkins absolutely kept me guessing until the end too. I tried throughout the story to guess the badguy, but it took me quite a while to figure it out.

The first time I read from Angela’s POV I wasn’t sure I’d like her. Well, actually I was sure I wouldn’t like her, but I wasn’t sure I would like reading about her. I was so wrapped up in Tiffany’s story, I didn’t care to hear from Angela. But the more I read, the more I enjoyed reading these chapters. Angela’s story was extremely interesting. I found myself looking forward to these chapters.
I can honestly say, I enjoyed both story lines immensely. Well done, Ms. Harkins! I haven’t read The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks, but I watched the movie and this reminded me of that. Two very different stories all wrapped up into one. It’s really, really good!
I can’t wait to see what MK comes up with next, until then, I’m off to read Breaking Braydon!

Jason Goodwin is a developer who is primarily self-taught. He likes to create electronic music in his free time.

He was first introduced to an Akka project at a Scala/Akka shop―mDialog―that built video ad insertion software for major publishers. The company was acquired by Google eventually. He has also been an influential technologist in introducing Akka to a major Canadian telco to help them serve their customers with more resilient and responsive software. He has experience of teaching Akka and functional and concurrent programming concepts to small teams there. He is currently working via Adecco at Google.

An Amazing introduction to akka. Tried to read the akka documentation which was dry and lengthy, so brought this book to read it in kindle. The book is very enjoyable. The reader is expected to know scala or java.

Excellent Introduction to Akka

This book is great to get you started to Akka. Prior to this I was lost between multiple blogs and internet resources. This book is very nice and gave me a solid start. Now every other resource on the internet is making sense to me.

Great introduction to Akka to get going fast. Code in the Kindle version is unformatted and hard to read, though.

Great content. This will definitely get you started with Akka if you haven't already used it.

The book assumes a working knowledge of either Scala or Java 8. Code examples are always provided in both languages, so you only need to know one of the two. This book also assumes knowledge of basic Java concurrency features (synchronization, atomics, volatile, etc.). You don't need to be an expert with Java concurrency to read this book, but you should at least know what synchronization is in Java and how to do it, for example.

I read the Kindle version. A heads up, (and, this is the reason I docked a star), the code examples are not formatted for the Kindle (who needs line breaks?). Luckily, there is a GitHub repository where the example code resides which is much easier to read.

The book introduces you to Akka via a very hands-on approach, asking you to write the code for two applications you build upon as you progress through the material. Homework assignments are provided at the end of each chapter to test your comprehension. I prefer hands-on approaches and this is the reason I give the book a solid 4 stars. Don't expect this to be all-inclusive. This will get you productive in Akka fast, but you will not REALLY know what you are doing if this is all you read. However, that is exactly what I needed (I recently picked up a project that relies heavily on Akka) for me to get started with hacking on Akka based projects.

If you are a swift learner, you could get through this book in two 8 hour work days by skimming it if you know Scala pretty well (prior knowledge of Futures, Promises, Concurrency, Scala's type system features like case classes or Java 8 lambdas, etc. really helps, here). I got through half of the material in 6 hours. Most people will probably want to take a week to digest the material presented in this book and work through the examples, though.

I really liked being able to compare the Java vs the Scala code side-by-side throughout the book.

THE tourist trains guidebook!

It's just what it says it is, a very good guide to train museums and operating tourist railroads throughout the United States and Canada. A succinct description of the attraction, its hours and location, contact information and, in many cases, other attractions in the area. This is the Fifth Edition of a guidebook that has been around for years. Whenever we consider travel to a new area of the country (or go back to a familiar spot) we take a look at the guidebook to see if there's a railroad attraction nearby that we would like to see.

This is a record of adventures, and of achievements in the face of supposedly insuperable obstacles, which is thrilling by reason of the size and color and significance of the events. Tibet and especially Lhasa, its capital city, is guarded from outsiders by fanatic natives, and the country is further guarded by the giant mountain ranges that hem it in. No white man before Dr. McGovern ever got through the icebound Himalayan passes in the winter, and no white man before him ever contrived to live in Lhasa long enough to photograph and study the Tibetans at close range. A party made up to go to Tibet, of which Dr. McGovern was one, was stopped at Syangtse and told to go back. All the rest of the party turned in their tracks and dropped down into India. Dr. McGovern, accompanied only by his servant Satan, continued in disguise into Tibet, arriving ultimately after a series of almost incredible hardships in Lhasa itself. He interviewed the Dalai Lama and other officials and functionaries, studied the people and took innumerable photographs. An amazing tale sure to enthrall the reader.

Virtual Visit to Tibet

This book is the story of an incredible journey into Tibet when foreign travel was not permitted and before the Chinese totally brutalized the country. It is a travel log, but the scenes set and the images presented will remain long past the reading of the book. For instance, the description of the Himalayas once the author was on the other side, or the pink salt at the mountain lakes, or how you can stand in shadow and sun and receive frostbite on one leg and sunburn on the other, and many more scenes of this kind. The capstone of the story was his arrival into Lhasa, the description of the city, and meeting the Dhalia Lama.

Fantastic Adventure Travel from the great age of explorers.

This is the true story of the first westerner to enter inner Tibet with the exception of a military expedition. McGovern, turned back at the border, dyes his skin and puts lemon drops in his blue eyes to disguise himself as a porter. Discovered in Lhasa, threatened with execution, he is befriended by the Dalai Lhama. McGovern speaks Tibetan, is a student of Budhism (in fact had been a Buddhist monk), and casts a unique eye on another world. A world that, by the time of Heinrich Harrar, had already changed dramatically.

Fun Filled Adventure for all ages

Giant gorilla people, lizard men, epic battles, adventure, sci-fi and dinosaurs! What else could you ask for in an adventure novel? Rice does a wonderful job of truly expanding the imagination with this novel. Though it is quite short, it is packed from beginning to end with fun filled adventure.

Short Summary: David and Perry work at a mine. Perry has invented a new machine which he calls "The Mole" that is supposed to dig deep tunnels... David and Perry get in the machine to try it out and end up in a new world. Apparently the earth is hollow and there are all KINDS of things walking around on the inside of the earth's crust. From giant bears, to monkey people, to the gorgeous Dian (her name actually is Dian the Beautiful). They end up fighting ferocious beasts, trying to rescue Dian, discovering hidden temples, fighting more beasts, being taken captive as slaves, and eventually starting a war.

The characters are not the most well developed I have read, however if I mentally compare this to modern YA books (which it is) they are about standard. The focus in this book is more on the action and the amazement of the creatures and beings that David encounters. The entire book is told from David's point of view, which is good because although he is smart... he starts out the book only around 18 years old, so he's naïve enough to get himself into all kinds of adventures but brave enough to find a way out of them. This is one of those fun filled tale where a man from a modern time finds himself in a primitive age where evolution hasn't followed the same plan. This was similar to "Journey to the Center of the Earth" by Jules Verne, but I actually felt that this book was more of an Action packed story than Verne's. Either way, get this book - read it - then hand it to your 10 year old. (Be sure to explain to him NOT to dig his attempts at reaching the Earth's core in the front yard). Highly recommended for just a fun read.
