About the Author
Ernest J. Gaines is a writer-in-residence at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His 1993 novel, A Lesson before Dying, won the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and was an Oprah Book Club pick in 1997. In 2004, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

An all around good novel

"Of Love And Dust" is a page-turning, please don't bother me can't you see that I'm reading books. By the author of "A Lesson Before Dying", "Of Love And Dust" is a story that takes place on plantation in 1948 in Louisana. The story is narrated by Jim Kelly, a black man that drives the tractor, and he tells the story of what happened when a young man named Marcus, who is awaiting trial for murder is "bonded" to the plantation to work. Marcus soon bumps head with Sidney BonBon, the cajun overseer, and plots revenge against him by trying to seduce Bonbon's black mistress, Pauline and Bonbon's wife, Louise. Told in the smooth, flowing, yet powerful style that is expected from Gaines, the novel is about the relationships and social interactions between the races and what happened when some dares to follow their hearts and break from tradition or standards that are socially acceptable. One of the things, and there are many, that I loved about this novel is that there is a good deal of humor. It is definitely a book to read.

Another compelling novel from one of America's best writers

One of Ernest Gaines' greatest talents lies in his ability to make the reader reconsider initial assumptions and prejudices about the characters in his stories. "Of Love and Dust" introduces us to Marcus, a young African-American man awaiting trial for the murder of another man. Apparently more concerned about his flashy wardrobe than the moral burden he should bear for his crime, Marcus quickly alienates much of the black community he enters when he goes to work on a Louisiana plantation owned by the white man who put up his bail. Often disrespectful of those who offer him advice out of concern for his well-being, in the beginning he comes across as a two-bit punk.
But soon his actions catch us in a moral crossfire. On one hand, we admire him because he refuses to kowtow to the racist customs that defined life in the South in the 1940s. On the other hand, however, he shows no respect or sympathy for the deep-set fear that pervades the plantation community, whose members know they will all suffer the violent consequences if anyone tries to turn the caste system on its head. (Gaines' descriptions of that fear make it almost palpable.)
The story takes off when, pushed to the limit by Bonbon, the plantation's Cajun overseer, Marcus is consumed by a quest for revenge. Marcus' first attempt to emasculate Bonbon comes with his unsuccessful seduction of Pauline, Bonbon's African-American mistress and the mother of two of his children. Rebuffed, Marcus turns his attention to Bonbon's white wife, Louise, a lonely and spiritless young woman who seeks from Marcus the love and attention her husband has saved for Pauline.
As the tale moves inexorably toward its predictable conclusion, Gaines adds to the dimension of the characters, gradually revealing how their actions have been influenced -- or even orchestrated -- by powers beyond their control. "Me and you -- what we is?" asks Bonbon. "We little people...They make us do what they want us to do, and they don't tell us nothing. We don't have nothing to say 'bout it, do we?"
Our initial black-and-white assumptions dissolve to gray, and we begin to view with greater sympathy the people caught up in conflict between their greatest desires and the restrictions of society. Even under pressure from insurmountable external powers, however, those people still rebel, in small or great ways, affirming their humanity, their spirit of independence, and their love for one another.

Excellent, just like all of Gaines' novels great read

Gaines has done it again. He has once again captured the spiritof the Southern Black Male. He like Alice Walker (who captures theSouthern woman) captures his characters spirit and their soul. He is an excellent writer. This book is great, it is easy reading and it addresses the hypocrisy of social and class standings like no other writer I have ever read. I have read four of Gaines' novels and all of them leave me breatless. I always want more even when the book is over. I am now about to read Bloodline and I can't wait. Mr. Gaines if you are reading this, PLEASE KEEP WRITING YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!!!!!

Jean DuPrau has created an unusual prequel (Random, 2006) to The City of Ember (2003) and The People of Sparks (2004, both Random). Rather than the pre-apocalyptic climate one would expect, the backwoods setting, the humming bracelet, and the robot vacuum cleaner give the novel a strange anachronistic feeling. Becky Ann Baker's depiction of the native North Carolinian accent is believable, and she voices all the characters perfectly. Sound effects enhance the telling. Listeners new to the series will have no problem following along—this title can stand on its own. The ending drags a bit as DuPrau tries to wrap up all the subplots. Ember fans will be a little disappointed that only the subtleties in the last chapter, What Happened Afterward, point to The City of Ember. Doesn't belong in the series - FILLER!

I have no idea what DuPrau was thinking when she included this book in the series since it is not really a prequel and its story has a flat quality that honestly seemed like an episode of "Three's Company" - you know when there would be some big misunderstanding? That is this book - it is a huge misunderstanding.

Ridiculous is the only word for the tacked on ending that is obviously put there to tie the book into the series.

It would have been a much better book if instead of being 50 years before people even went into the City of Ember it happened right before the cataclysm - perhaps showing us what lead to the destruction and then what it was like for those first people in the City of Ember to adjust to their new life underground.

This story made little sense and just dragged on - I knew all the devices and ended up skimming the pages to make it to the inevitable conclusion. I know these are kids books but any 10 year old would have seen the ending coming from a mile away.

You can completely read the entire series without reading this book though she tries to tie in the final book with this one in a paragraph but it really doesn't mean anything. Aliens? Puhleeze!

I read the first two books of the Ember series to my son, and he loved them, but this book just didn't really come together. The fourth one is not as good as the first two but better than this one.

Great songbook with both proper notation and guitar tablatures for ALL guitar parts

QUICK REVIEW: I'm surprised nobody's written a review for this GREAT songbook yet. I noticed in many reviews for Wilco's previous songbook Wilco Songbook, that customers were disappointed that the book contained no guitar tabs, just music notes. With Wilco - Sky Blue Sky (Play It Like It Is), which features every single song on their 2007 album Sky Blue Sky--and only those twelve songs (check Wiki for track listing)-- we are given guitar tablature for EVERY GUITAR PART in each song, from Tweedy's background finger-picking to Nels Cline's lead jazz phrasings and difficult solos, and everything in between. The best part of this is that the tabs are actually approved by Wilco! As they should be--they're perfectly accurate.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION: In case you want to know EXACTLY what you're getting here... After a table of contents, it opens with a page-long description of the band's new line-up for Sky Blue Sky and obvious details about the conception of the album. Pretty superfluous stuff, but it features a lot of quotes from Tweedy himself on the band's new direction with their added players. Knowledgeable fans will likely gain nothing here. Then it gets right into the tabs. The songs are laid out in traditional musical notation with sheet music under the lyrics to each song (so you can easily follow along). Under each line is a corresponding six-line staff with the tabs we're all familiar with. These are VERY, VERY accurate. They include subtle pinch harmonics, proper slides, hammer-ons, palm mutes, tremolo picking, vibrato, bends-- literally EVERYTHING as heard on the album. And again, they do this for every guitar part, which is sometimes three simultaneously. Finally, the last page features a detailed guitar tablature notation legend with helpful pictures for those who aren't sure how to execute all those techniques I just mentioned above.

FINAL NOTE: If you play guitar and are familiar with the songs on this album, Wilco's first with Nels Cline, then you know how valuable this book is. Nowhere on the web can one find the proper tabs for the solos of many of these songs-especially Either Way, Impossible Germany, and above all Side With the Seeds. Even more surprising is the harmonizing of the other guitar parts, which I hardly noticed before playing them here- they are accurate too, and often beautiful sounding. Simply put, what you will find in this songbook is perfectly accurate tabs, and if mastered, it could be used to reproduce all guitar parts on the album accurately.

Very good guitar book for a great guitar album

The book is great. It's very comprehensive in terms of covering the entire album and all of the guitar parts. This is probably the most guitar-intense Wilco album so far, especially because of the wide latitude granted to Nels Kline (although Tweedy does a great job too). Nels' solos are meticulously transcribed and make for a lot of fun playing.

The book includes both tab and music (which is great) as well as multiple guitar parts when they appear.
