The Lamsa Bible is Worth Reading

While the Greek and Roman churches flourished, a herdsmen people living in Muslim Kurdishia had their Aramaic manuscripts, unadulterated by well-meaning Christians to the West. Discovered around WW I by the British, a lad with a photographic memory was "adopted" by missionaries, taught English and well educated. Dr. Lamsa's translation builds faith in God's protection of His Word as this Bible is remarkably similar to other English Bibles. This N.T. is all you need study as the O.T. was preserved by the Jews and not molested by well meaning Christians.

Twelve-step recovery is not just for goys. Taub, a rabbi in the Chabad-Lubavitch movement and cofounder of a Jewish recovery community in Milwaukee, brings a lens of Jewish spirituality to the 12 steps and finds them not only kosher but also helpful in deepening Jewish spiritual life. Citing Carl Jung, he first analyzes addiction as a spiritual problem of longing for God but substituting alcohol (spirits) for spiritual relationship. From there he goes on to trace and emphasize the God consciousness that the 12 steps advocate, and he then offers a careful theological analysis that finds much consistency between recovery and Jewish teachings about God, prayer, forgiveness, and relationships. The œGod of our understanding that recovery talks about is also the œGod of our fathers, he argues. A glossary of rabbinic sources buttresses his own gloss on the 12 steps. This is a thoughtful counter to one criticism occasionally heard—that the 12 steps are implicitly Christian—and a singular and valuable resource for those in need. (Feb.)

Every now and again I run across a book that just grabs me. Rabbi Taub has written such a book. His understanding of the disease of addiction is refreshing. It is obvious that this book is written by a man who has integrated his understanding of spirituality into his personal experience with recovery. Rabbi Shais Taub and his wife, Brocha, were founding co-directors of the Jewish recovery community in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A Unique and Long Overdue Work That Will Save Lives....

The recommendation from Rabbi and Dr. Abraham Twerski at the twilight of his career alone should be enough to read the book. The book stands on its own merit and to date is the most illuminating work by a Rabbi about the 12 steps and their place in Jewish tradition. Rabbi Taub debunks numerous myths in the Jewish community regarding the 12 steps that have often resulted in devastated families and even deaths due to addiction. Like all good Rabbis, R. Taub writes with the legendary Jewish humor and an erudite respect for the study of Torah by citing sources like the Talmud, Ethics of our Fathers, and the Kuzari. If this book saves even one life then it was worth the effort. It will likely save many lives.

A Must Read

While the title of Rabbi Shais Taub's book rightly suggests that this is a work aimed at Jews in recovery from addiction, the true success of Taub's endeavor is that the book will provide insight and a fresh perspective to anyone in recovery, regardless of religious affiliation. The book exhibits a depth of understanding, both of the disease of addiction, and of the spiritual process of recovery, that transcends religion. Addiction, after all, is a human affliction, not a Jewish one. And recovery from addiction is a spiritual process, not a Jewish process.

And yet, this is clearly a "Jewish" book. The writing, at once conversational and learned, entices the reader with anecdotes, touches on the history of the various 12-step recovery programs, draws parallels from scripture, and provides coherent and inspired guidance on matters both spiritual and religious. Taub is adept at revealing the congruence of the 12-step recovery process, Jewish theology, and Jewish tradition. He convincingly demonstrates, in example after example, that there exists no conflict between Judaism and the 12-step recovery philosophy. Rather, Taub celebrates the fact that the God mentioned throughout the 12-step programs' literature can be the God of Israel.

Taub's book is necessary reading for the Jew in recovery, and is highly recommended for anyone in recovery.

If you are Jewish, this is the only book of its kind for you

Being a Member of the Tribe and in the program, this is the first book that I can honestly identify with and had several A-HA moments when studying the material. Hashem is the G-d of my understanding, and this book was written for me. I grew up in an Orthodox (Yiddish was spoken) home, and most of the things my Dad told me about alcohol addiction were reitinerated in the book. Thank you Reb Taub for your thoughtful insight.

Really enjoyed this review book. It really helped me master the difficult content and made studying much easier. I would recommend this to all nursing students. It was so much more helpful than the big textbook. It helped me be able to apply the information and the questions were very helpful.

Encouragement, hope, compassion for all......

The author has a BA in ministry and addiction counseling, and Masters
in pastoral counseling. Her work credentials are impressive. But the
heart of her message here is based on life experience - life as a
Catholic, life as the wife, sister, friend of alcoholics. This book
is exceptional because Ms. Sutton lived it.

She was born to an Irish-Catholic mother and German Lutheran father.
Life revolved around hard work, church and school activities, and the
Catholic priests and Sisters who impacted her young life. Ms. Sutton
reached adulthood with a compassionate, forgiving heart and a Catholic
faith that was raw, deep, and indestructible. This faith sustained
her through awful situations that might have broken her otherwise.
Her naieve innocence and joy gave way to life's crushing realities.
First, two of her sisters died young in close succession. Then, her
sweet young husband and father of her five children slowly transformed
into an abusive alcoholic. When she divorced him to escape the
violence, she and her five children lived in abject poverty. She was
anathema - a divorced Catholic with five children, no money, and very
few options. When times were toughest, she looked at her five
beautiful children and told herself, "Don't cry because it's over.
Smile because it happened." From the rock bottom of her life, she
crawled into the light again through meaningful work helping others.

Readers will find great truths in this book, and a bottomless supply
of encouragement and support. Ms. Sutton's book is biographical,
blending her genetic history, faith, sorrows and joys with a
philosophy and profession that demonstrates a strong belief: All life
is sacred in the truest sense of the word. This woman, this counselor
lives Christ's compassion, regardless of circumstance. Through
Christ, through her Catholic faith, through supportive priests and
nuns, through Al Anon, through education and her life work, Annetta
Sanow Sutton found her voice and tries to help others find theirs.

Pope John Paul II's message to his people is Ms. Sutton's message to
readers: "Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter
people and hallelujah is our song."

This book is highly recommended to anyone who loves an alcoholic and
needs encouragement, to Catholics, and to any person struggling
through tough times and hoping for a miracle.

reflections of strength

An honest sharing of life experiences. A narration of making sense out of insane moments and inexplicable violence. The author enters a world many have endured, a world many have witnessed. Some of us turn it around to make goodness happen, some cannot find the strength and fall into abysmal hopelessness. This author brings you up, offers hope, offers direction. This author is effective in life and beneficial in her writing.
