Highly recommend this box set.

This set is awesome. I bought this before I went to the boot camp thru Global Knowledge. In all honesty, I didn't study as much as I should've prior to taking the course but found it funny that Global Knowledge issued this book to students as part of the course. The book has a lot of great info and it's written in a manner that makes for easier reading, if that makes any sense. I liked this boxed set mostly for the software that comes with it. I read each chapter in the book once, maybe twice depending on the topic, and then used the practice exam software to help reinforce what I just read. The software is awesome!

With all of that being said, this set is essentially (I really don't want to say worthless here) unusable now because the exam has changed. Meaning, ISC2 changed up the domains and content on the exam beginning January 1st. They added content on VM technology and cloud computing -- neither of which are touched in this boxed set.

While I would highly recommend this boxed set to anyone wanting the CISSP certification, I can't recommend this set due to the change in the exam. A lot of the material hasn't changed but there's a good portion that did and you don't want to chance a $600 exam on something like this.

Good luck to everyone planning to take this exam! I passed on my first try thanks in large part to this boxed set.

Inconsistent, poorly formed content

The quality of the printed study content varies significantly. Much of it is spot on; it's up to date and relevant. However, the author often drops into explaining basics that shouldn't be necessary for any computer professional. At other times, the author seems to state opinions and speculation as fact. The book desperately needs review from a technical editor. Much of the content could be excised in order to make a much, much smaller and more focussed book.

The practice exam content is good. Many would do well to purchase that and decide whether they need the remaining content, or whether this set is the best source of that material.

Some of the advertised study content is completely missing from the CD. What's present is difficult to use if you aren't using Windows, as the primary navigation tools are Windows executables. (Really? For platform-neutral content? In 2011?)

All in all, the set seems to have been assembled rather ad hoc, and bulked up with unnecessary material that doesn't justify the list price.

All you need for the exam

I've just taken the exam (Oct. 2012), and passed it on my first attempt. This book was all I used. It IS comprehensive, truly all-in-one. You can pass the exam by just using this set. I will admit that I've been around IT for some time, and I did take CompTIA's Security+ exam as a precursor. Still, in my opinion this book is all you need. As an earlier review mentioned, the entire book is in PDF format. The security features have been set such that you can highlight information as you're going through the book, even using different colors. I think this is important because I have purchased books with CD's that don't permit this. Someone mentioned that there are only about 500 practice questions. That's not true with the addition I have. There are close to 1000 questions once you install the Total Tester practice exams, and if you include the questions at the end of the book, there is more than a thousand questions. My only critique is some of the chapters are very long, chapter 7 being the bear. But all-in-all, this is a great book. With one author, you don't have to concern yourself with variations in writing style from one chapter to the next. I know this was a problem for me with one book I purchased (nothing to do with the CISSP). Thanks Shon Harris for taking the time to put together this information because it really helped me, and for those who read this review, I believe the book will help you also.

Worth five stars just for its insights

It's obvious that the authors of this book are extremely compassionate professionals. Although one may not subscribe to the theory of cognitive therapy being an effective solution for depressive or suicidal invididuals, the first few chapters alone are worth the price of the book: they are insightful, non-judgmental and empathetic. I am reading this book from the angle of someone with an extremely depressed family member, and I can't wait to give it to him, because I think he will find hope in its message. Highly recommended for those contemplating harming themselves; just as highly recommended for their friends and family members.
