A masterpiece

This book is a masterpiece. In practice, it deserves to become the "Holy Bible" of Microeconometrics applied to (but not only to) Development Economics. It is beautifully written by an amazingly knowledgeble economist, who has actually worked for years (and still does) on most of the issues this book deals with. It is no easy reading, and it would be worth spending a day for every single page, but it's excellent even if you don't want to go through the details, and you just need an intuition about the issues covered. The first chapter introduces the reader to many important aspects of the contruction and use of household surveys. The second chapter masterfully reviews many concepts of applied econometrics. Chapter 3 is about poverty and inequality measurement. Chapter 4 is about "Nutrition, children, and intrahousehold allocation", Chapter 5 deals with prices and tax reforms, and Chapter 6 with saving and consumption smoothing. The book also contains many useful Stata codes the author wrote and used for his many papers. Again, this is not a trivial reading, but if you are interested in applied economics you will find reading this book extremely rewarding, and often almost entertaining, because Deaton is one of the very few economists around able to write about technical stuff in a brilliant and intuitive way.

Excellent "user's manual" for applied development economists

This book is my go-to reference for all things practical. I am particularly a fan of the code appendix, which makes replicating (and therefore understanding) Deaton's results very easy. Through its exhaustive content (both theoretical and empirical), this book helps the reader get a full grasp of the many issues involved in using household surveys from the developing world. I recommend starting with the first chapter and working your way to the end. The section on survey design is very helpful to anyone interested in fieldwork. A must-buy for all applied economists, particularly those in development.

This is an excelent manual for anyone interested in studying consumption or welfare in developing countries. Profesor Deaton is certainly one of the experts in the field. His book is well written and flows easily from theory to practice. Really enjoy it !

Three months later, she calls him out of the blue and suggests that the two of them drive to North Carolina to speak with another survivor like themselves Elena has found on the Internet. Their road trip is a darkly funny journey of healing that takes them deep into the heart of their grief and others’, and then beyond it, to a place of peace and laughter.

One of the strangest pilgrimages ever

If you're old enough, you may remember the "Chuckles Bites the Dust" episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show, where a rogue elephant in a circus parade mistook Chuckles the Clown for a huge peanut and "shelled" him to death. His comrades at the TV station were heartbroken by the tragedy, but also could hardly suppress their laughter. "Aftermirth" dealt with those same mixed emotions that come from bizarre, freakish accidents where people are killed.

In the story, narrator Michael Larssen, whose wife was killed when lightning struck her nickel-titanium underwire bra, withdraws completely from the world. Only when he meets Elena, whose father was killed in a freakish industrial accident, does he begin to live again. On one of the strangest pilgrimages ever, they meet others who have lost loved ones in bizarre accidents, and they learn the startling secret to moving on with their lives.

I enjoyed "Aftermirth" very much. The storyline was quite original, and the characters - even the dead ones - were painted vividly enough to be real people. Kudos to Ms. Jordan for a very intriguing and entertaining story.

Hillary Jordan demonstrates yet again how little you REALLY know her as a writer...."Aftermirth" is unexpected, irreverent and super-smart, finding both humor and human connection in that most bleak of topics: death. A fantastic and thought-provoking read, by one of the best (and clearly most versatile) literary voices out there!

Alas, the sacrifices that some people make to take their genes out of the human gene pool. "Aftermath" tells the story not only of people who have contributed to their death by their own foolish actions but also of those who have met their ends through bizarre, albeit humorous, circumstances. While the story naturally has a morbid thread, its message goes well beyond death and bereavement. If anything, it shows that death can forge the beginning of new relationships - and, let's face it, that the means to the end can be pretty damn funny.

Very good content, Very good customer service.

I'm not native American, but I'm Korean.
So, I'm not familiar with many BASIC words for native English user.
(People whose mother language is not English may agree with this.)
There are book for ESSENTIAL 300 (or 500) GRE vocabularies, but it doesn't work for people not American.
Those people need to review whole words including BASIC words for GRE, not just a few ESSENTIAL words.
That's why this book is super awesome.
I've purchased several books and looked through them but no book has such many words like this book does.
As long as it doesn't include infinitely many words like dictionary, the more the book has words, the better it is.

I also need to mention customer service.
I'm using Kindle edition.
Kindle users may experience that content varies as you move through pages.
(Since Kindle use 'location' concept instead of robust 'page' concept to fit diverse devices.
So, you can possibly miss some vocabularies.
So, I asked them to number each words, (i.e., 365 accident, 366, acquire) and they immediately update numbering version.
I've never seen this good customer service.

If you're native or already so good with many vocabularies like TOEFL words, well, go with your own choice.
If you need to review or want to study as many words as possible,

Ive been a little rusty since undergrad years.. Found this book helpful in getting me up to snuff with those words you may have left on the back burner because you don't use them everyday... I think it would be helpful for SAT Prep too, certainly would increase a high school students scores who was looking to increase their scores and maximize opportunities for continuing education in general undergrad or graduate.

I started my GRE prep with verbal, and I went over vocabulary before delving into prep questions. This book is an excellent resource for vocabulary found on the GRE. It's far more extensive than any other GRE vocabulary books or "boxes". Once I started working on practice questions, I found this list far more helpful than the other resources.

A heavy read which demands thorough attention, but worth it!

Gottman's 1994 book comes on the heels of groundbreaking work in behavioral observation methodologies. Trained as a mathematician, Gottman spares us no quantified details. However, quantification and reliable measurement are the indispensible components of good scientific research of which Gottman's work is a nearly overwhelmingly thorough example. Gottman takes us back stage to the development and the testing of hypotheses about what makes marriages tick and what makes them wind down in very convincing fashion. I lecture from this text in my university course and student attention is usually very high and they ask many questions. The fact that Gottman can predict marital dissolution, in some instances, at better than 90%, is itself a testament to his rigourous and insightful work. Isn't that one of the main points of science: to predict?

Gottman presents a thorough look at the methodology used in his studies of marital interation and divorce prediction. I believe this text is a must for the bookshelves of professional researchers. Laypersons might enjoy his trade books written with Nan Silver.

AH 100/100-6/3000 Restoration Guide is a must buy

I had an opportunity to ready and review this book even before I purchased it at Amazon.com. The book is very well thought out, easy to find the answers to specific restoration and concours questions and filled with specific picture examples.
This book is a must library addition for any owner of the Austin Healey marque both for reference and the enjoyment of reading about interesting insights into the history of the cars and the people who were the inspiration behind the production of the cars.

IF and only IF . . .

If and ONLY if you are actively restoring a "Big Healey" for concours, this is a very useful book. When the authors call it a "restoration guide" they mean something very specific. Concours fanatics care about things like plating on screw heads, and the texture of wire loom tape. This book is crammed full of such stultifyingly dull minutae. It's powerful in the hands of a concours restorer, but almost useless if you're a shade tree mechanic trying to figure out how to replace a rusty fender. For everyone else it's guaranteed instant somnulence. Try and read any 5 pages of this book. I guarantee you you're snoring before you've turned two pages. But again, if you're a Healey concours fanatic, this is your book, man. Read it, live it, love it.

This bood is as good as it gets

I have to say this is probably one of the single best restoration guides written for any car. Extensively researched it will give you everything you need to know to do a award winning restoration of the Big Healey. It doesn't really go into mechanical restoration because that's what the shop manual is for - this book covers all the little trim, paint and various details not covered in any other book. This book is absolutely fantastic.
