About the Author
Fanny Britt is a playwright, author and translator. She has a dozen plays to her credit. She has also translated over fifteen contemporary plays and several other works of literature. She writes children’s books and has published, among others, the Félicien series with La Courte Échelle. Jane, the Fox and Me is her first graphic novel. She lives in Montreal with her family.

Isabelle Arsenault is a very talented Quebec illustrator, who has garnered an impressive number of awards and international recognition. She has illustrated several books, including Le coeur de monsieur Gauguin (Governor General’s Award) and My Letter to the World and Other Poems (Governor General’s Award Finalist, IRA Children’s Choices), and she has won the Grand Prix for illustration (Magazines du Québec) for six years running.

Please get this

This book is just amazing. I have two pre-teen step children (fraternal twins) and find myself loathing their introduction to middle school, make up, intelligence, etc, etc, etc, etc. I bought this book for one of them and read it before wrapping it up, taking me about 15 minutes to do. Then I thought about it every day for days upon days. A book that appears to be so simple, that packs what I understand to be a very loaded and complex message about fitting in, self acceptance, self image and perceptions in general.

Outstanding literature for young women

Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. That's really all that needs to be said, in my opinion. But the wonderful message it carries for young women who find themselves unable to 'fit in', is worth noting. While this type of story certainly isn't new, the way the author weaves in her love for a particular piece of classic literature (Jane Eyre), is novel and intriguing. I found myself borrowing it from my pre-teen daughter, to whom I'd given it as a gift. My hope is that this book will become something of a family heirloom. It's really that gorgeous.

A welcome addition to my library

I love this book: the writing, the illustrations, the humanity. And there is a fox! I don't know if all girls (even the mean ones) fall prey to other mean girls. If only I had had Jane Eyre tell me that I was not a sausage, life would have been easier. I want to place this in every pediatrician's office throughout the land.

Simply astounding and mind boggling !

My last two weeks have been most stimulating as I finished this remarkable series. From the first book, "Neverness" to "The Broken God" to "The Wild" and finally "War in Heaven", I just could not put the series down. Yes there are times when Zindell tend to be repetitive in his philosophical views but the intensity of the story and characters more than makes up for it. "Neverness" is simply exquisite with spectacular world building and intriguing characters. The protagonist, Mallory, a brilliant and complex personality is definitely one sci-fi character I will remember. "The Broken God" is simply profound though at times Zindell tends to be overboard with his philosophical views. At first I miss Mallory's narration as the first person. However by the middle of "The Broken God", I found myself engrossed with Danlo's fate and liking this protagonist immensely. From the negative reviews of "The Broken God", I perceive that some readers have stopped reading the series due to the slow pace of "The Broken God". That is a real pity because no sci-fi die-heart should miss "The Wild". Here Zindell displays his remarkable world building skills and vivid imagination once again. The pace here is fast and I found myself imprisoned by Danlo's adventures. "War in Heaven" is equally though provoking and captivating. Danlo's loss here is intensely written and I found myself moved to tears. "War in Heaven" is a sastisfying conclusion to the series as Danlo completes his soul searching and finally "sees" his role in the universe or should I say universes. As usual with any great stories, I am sad that the end comes too quickly. I will miss Danlo, Mallory, Soli, Bardo and the Solid State Entity but am glad to have discovered Zindell's world. I am please to add Zindell to my list of must read writers and look forward to reading his new fantasy series. It is a pity that this brilliant writer is not more widely recognized.

Not "Neverness"

David Zindell's first novel in this series, "Neverness," is nothing short of astounding. His imagination - and the incredibly rich world that has sprung forth from it - is boundless. But "War in Heaven," the fourth and final book in the "Requiem for Homo Sapiens" series, does not match up to the breathtaking "Neverness," nor even to its own promising beginning.
At the start of this book, the protagonist Danlo wi Soli Ringess has just returned from a perilous mission. His goal was to convince a well-meaning but badly misguided religious order (the "Architects") to change its doctrine of advocating endless procreation - a doctrine which is slowly but surely killing the galaxy. Danlo is successful, but at a price: a splinter group (the "Iviomils") determined to preserve the old ways has broken off & threatens terrible violence.
Danlo, back at "home," finds himself not in the city of Neverness but in Lightstone, a new city on a new planet. Danlo's enlightened academic Order has created a mirror of itself on a distant, hidden planet as a hedge against the possible destruction of Icefall, where Neverness and the original Order are located. Soon, we find out, a new schism is brewing between the new & old Orders, with religion (this time, a controversial new faith called "Ringism" has made inroads into the old Order) again being the cause.
And finally we learn that even the galaxy's gods are at war. A super-entity called the Silicon God has slain two of his kind, and the gods who oppose him are banding together to stop him.
In short, as the title rather explosively proclaims, there is war in heaven.
But we get to see little of it. The Architects and Iviomils barely appear for the rest of the book, and except for a couple of oblique references, the gods don't show up at all. The two academic Orders do fight a pair of bloody, spectacular space battles, but nearly all of the "action" (such as it is) is centered on Neverness. Danlo (who, as an ambassador to Neverness, is utterly unable to prevent the impending war) spends hundreds of pages in a virtual holding pattern - he does almost nothing except bide time while hatching a new plan.
I won't reveal any more of the plot. I will say that the book has its merits - Zindell's world is still intensely interesting, and he still has some new, mind-bending ideas to share. (How about an ethereal ecosystem that thrives in the near-vacuum at the edge of space, or a perverse, megalomaniacal god intent on consuming all the matter and energy in the universe?)
Just expect some disappointment after the first 150 pages, but enjoy the ride anyway.

STILL answering questions with questions

Danlo alas keeps this sporadically annoying habit that's so much a part of his nature throughout what I think is probably the last in the series of books that began with Neverness (for everyone but Danlo) or The Broken God (for Danlo himself). While the last book was a strange, yet oddly intoxicating mixture of philosophy and SF, it lacked the intrinsic cohension that the first book had somehow managed to convey, maybe because of the sublime setting of the city of Neverness, about the finest and best detailed futuristic city in all of SF. Here, after a brief start, we're back in Neverness as Danlo tries to keep war from breaking out and tries, to various degrees of success, to also piece together all the fragments of problems he's either been involved in or created. Zindell sets up quite the dilemma for all the protagonists, not only has the Order of Pilots fragmented and is threatening to fight the other (one part's in exile, the other part is falling sway to a new religion started by Danlo's former best friend and based on the fact that his father might have become a god), the Warrior-Poets are trying to kill anyone who might become a god, Neverness is falling into riots as the Ringists are killing all the nonbelievers. Danlo has never seemed more human and less human here, his very much tries to keep to his vow not to harm anyone and for the most part keeps it, but he's sorely tempted otherwise. He runs into old friends and enemies and enemies who used to be friends (yeah, we're talking to you, Hanuman). This is the most brutal of the three books and Danlo doesn't have an easy time of things, however, as exhilerating as it is to have him succeed, the efforts almost make him seem superhuman and as the book winds to a close, you wonder if ANYTHING can stop this guy. Some points of the book also fall prey to Philosopy Syndrome, where Zindell drowns you in pretty prose depicting Danlo debating some inner struggle, which while great to read and has some absolutely beautiful writing, makes you want to shout at the book "Get on with it already!". But I can't say I didn't like this book, heck, I more than just liked it, this was a satisfying end to the cycle that builds on what came before and takes it to new places. Danlo is one of the best characters to appear in the last decade, and the rest of the people are all lovingly detailed, no one is all good, no one is all bad, everyone has reasons and motivations, some you agree with, some you don't. The clarity and scope of Zindell's ideas, enough to make you think without making your head hurt, are fascinating and his attention to detail, both in dialogue and description and philosophy, will make you want to read the entire series again and again. Even with Danlo's annoying question habit, this has to rank as one of the finest series of the last couple of years, without a doubt.

Holy Crap!

Holy Crap! This book just bitch slapped me. I could not put it down and was up all night. A few things you need to know: there are some triggers (drug use, abuse) but its very well written and handled. CLIFFHANGER (just warning you!).
You must read this book. I can't stop thinking about it. I plan to write a full review on my blog once I process everything that just happened to me at the hands of a book. Seriously, the feels, man.

this book just ripped out my heart and stomped on it

Oh, this book- what do I say about this book that just ripped my heart out? I will start by saying it was very well written and overflowed with emotion. The story is told in dual POV so we get inside both Hadley and Reed's heads. And man oh man Hadley's head is a scary place at times over the course of the book but Reed's POV helped me to understand him and ultimately find a way to root for him as the story unfolded.

Fighting to Start covers several years in their lives and really focuses on how one decision can effectively cause a ripple effect as the resulting waves transform everything in ways you never would have predicted. And that story is far from pretty - miscommunications, secrets and heartache abound and are compounded by poor decisions made as s result.

That leads me to my struggle with the book overall. I am a person who reads for enjoyment and to find a happy place to lose myself for awhile. There is enough that happens in real life that can bring me down that I won't necessarily read a book that inflicts this type of emotional turmoil on me without preparing myself for it and really being in the right frame of mind to approach it properly. Unfortunately I went into the story somewhat blind, and after forcing myself to read through to the end, I found an unresolved ending that left me more than a little bit cranky and teary eyed.

So with that being said, the author did write an engaging and emotional story that was a page turner for sure. People who thrive on the emotional roller coaster and constant drama/ angst should definitely 1-click this story. I just personally was not in the proper mindset for this type of story when I read it and felt like I had been put through an unwelcome wringer right alongside them by the time I got to the last page. Part 2 of their story is still a few months away and it seems as though there are more secrets to be revealed particularly on Hadley's part in Fighting to Stay although I have a good idea what one of them will be already based on a few hints dropped in Fighting to Start. And yes I will probably read the next installment with the added benefit of being able to prep myself for it better the next time around.

About the Author

Bret Contreras, PhD, MS, CSCS, has become known in the strength and conditioning industry as the Glute Guy because of his expertise in helping clients develop strong, shapely glutes. In 2015 he earned his PhD in sport science from the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, where he studied under biomechanics expert John Cronin. Contreras has conducted numerous electromyography experiments in his research.

As the former owner of Lifts Studio in Scottsdale, Arizona, Contreras worked closely with hundreds of clients ranging from sedentary people to elite athletes, and he invented a glute-strengthening machine called the Hip Thruster. He currently trains figure competitors, writes programs for clients from all over the world, and consults for various professional sport teams. He is the author of the bestselling book Bodyweight Strength Training Anatomy (Human Kinetics, 2014) and coauthor of Strong Curves (Victory Belt, 2013).

Contreras is a distinguished lecturer in strength and conditioning, presenting at many conferences throughout the United States, including those hosted by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He is editor in chief of the NCSA’s Personal Training Quarterly and cofounder of Strength & Conditioning Research Review. He is a peer-reviewed author and regular contributor to well-known industry publications including Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, Oxygen, and MuscleMag. Bodyweight Strength Training Anatomy

I've been training exclusively with bodyweight exercises from the book You Are Your Own Gym by Mark Lauren for about a year now and have achieved great results. Im a big fan of this type of training, so naturally this book piqued my interest. It has good exercises, and it does a decent job of illustrating the primary and secondary muscles being worked. Overall, I enjoyed the read and had only the below critiques:

1. I found exercise descriptions should have been more descriptive, especially for the more complex movements like the one-arm push-up, especially since the illustrations show only the finishing positions. The devil's in the details, especially when you expect people to train alone with only your book as their guide.

2. I would have liked to see more ways to increase or decrease the difficulty of these movements or been given recommendations on how to work up to the harder exercises. Unlike with lifting weights or using machines, with bodyweight training you can't just add or remove plates or adjust a pin. Without knowing how to adjust the difficulty, the usefulness of many of these movements is highly limited. Exercise progressions and tips on adjusting movement intensity are a must for any book on Bodyweight training to be truly effective.

3. Because of the above stated reason (not knowing how to progress or adjust movement difficulty), it's impossible to create a real strength training program with the given bodyweight exercises. Yes, you can exercise, but you can't really "train" with an end goal other than to increase reps. The author's program in the back of the book is evidence to this as he does not provide rep goals for any of the exercises and oddly suggests training the entire body 5 times per week, using the same exercises. That is without a doubt "exercising" and not what I would consider strength training with clear objectives in mind. When using a good strength training program that makes use of whole body training sessions, every other day is plenty for the average person. And since movement intensity needs to be adjusted in order to keep you in the appropriate rep range for the development of strength, in my opinion, "Bodyweight Exercise Anatomy" would have been a more appropriate title for this book.

Like I said, overall, I like the book, and it does contain good information. However, I was only able to add a few minor tools to my bodyweight training arsenal that I hadn't already picked up from using You Are Your Own Gym for the last year.

Amazing info for the bodyweight training enthusiast

Bret Contreras has produced an amazing addition to the rapidly growing body of literature on body weight strength and athletic training. Bret has included data on muscles involved in each of the exercises he describes. This is data I have not seen in anywhere close to this detail and accuracy elsewhere. Scattered throughout the book are golden nuggets of wisdom on body weight training, and training in general. These are all of the most common sense and readily applicable nature. Warnings as to over use and over training are gently inserted, not to scare, but to keep the user of this book on the right path. There is a brief section on nutrition that makes sense (eat natural foods, leaning protein heavy, but include vegetables and fruits, balancing with a few carbs. That's it). Bret does not push Paleo, either the original or Rob Wolff's version, but clearly approaches that concept.

First Bret introduces us to the concept of bodyweight training. Then he takes the parts of the body and details several exercises in each. In each of these sections, the exercise is rated as to difficulty, well described with diagrams depicting the muscles and bones and postures involved in most of them, , and then discussed in terms of the motions and sports that utilize that activity. The body sections Bret discusses are very inclusive: Arms, Neck and Shoulders, Chest, Core, Back, Thighs, Glutes, Calves. Mention is made of the grip in appropriate places. Then a chapter on whole body exercises is included. Bret finishes with a chapter called "Planning your Program" discussing Individualization, Autoregulation, Strength Balance, Training Goals, Training Variables, Putting it all Together, and Training for Fat Loss. Each chapter is clearly and simply written. Necessary words are defined right in the text. If one masters all the words Bret defines and uses, one would have a good understanding of basic anatomy of the human body. Bret has pruned the details of human anatomy down to the essentials and makes the essentials clear. There is not fluff in this book.

Bret Contreras has both a Masters degree and the CSCS certification. He has owned a strength gym in Scottsdale AZ. Bret is, according to his bio in the book, a sought after speaker. He is a peer-reviewd author and contributor to many industry publications. Currently, he is in New Zealand studying biomechanics, pursuing a PhD in sport science. In spite of all this, this book is not pedantic, but well and clearly written.

Bret has chosen an excellent menu of exercises in each anatomic area. But to keep the size of the book manageable, he has left many good exercises out. The user of this book would benefit from just doing the Exercises Bret includes. But I would recommend augmenting the lists with the encyclopedic texts "Men's Health Big Book of Exercises" and "Men's Health Power Training" by Robert dos Remedios.

This book is a reference book that should be on the shelves of every bodyweight enthusiast, and trainer. I initially bought the Kindle Version. But once, I realized the importance and uniqueness if this book, I ordered the paperback version for my library.

Great Reference

This is a awesome book. It provides information on exercises you can do pretty much anywhere using body weight, and it has useful pointers for correctly executing each one. The images highlight which muscle group you're working on most, so it makes it easier to choose which exercises to focus on.
Overall, it's an informative guide to working out and a good reference to have.

In Rumour and Radiation, Paul Hegarty provides novel insight into and strong evidence of the audiovisual nature of video arts as it turns out to play a key role in contemporary crossmedia practices. His arguments are convincing: that sound and image in video are different yet connected to each other. His many examples are fascinating, particularly the importance of sounds in the creation of spatial effects in video works where the artists, like Bruce Nauman, Jane and Louise Wilson, Christian Marclay, or Ryoji Ikeda, explore materials and perceptions across usual borders. Paul Hegarty teaches Philosophy and Visual Culture at University College Cork, in Ireland. He is the author of Noise/Music (Continuum, 2007). He jointly runs the experimental record label dotdotdotmusic, and performs in the noise bands Safe and La Société des Amis du Crime.

How to get anything on anybody

I purchased this book back in 1987 when it was first published. It is a great source for information regarding electronic phone surveilance, gadgetry, tracing people through public and private records, etc. Although some of the information is still usable, I believe it may be outdated. There are numerous sources for spy equipment in the back of the book, but how many of those are still in business? Who knows.

Good book. It's a bit dated, but still solid. Fundamentals are easy to understand and are transferable to newer technology and situations.

I guess I read the description too quickly. My fault. This book may have been good when it was written during it's time, which was like the 80s, but now is severely outdated and kind of useless. Won't help you with todays new technologies and laws. Get a more modern to the date book.
