The Kiss of Angels

This was an interesting and different story. Muriel is cherub angel best known as Cupid and she is tired of helping others find true love when she herself wants to experience it too. When she meets Chariel she just can't let the opportunity pass and even when everyone tells her it is impossible for an angel to love she sets to prove everyone wrong.

I love the chemistry between the characters and that the story doesn't revolve in the characters going at each other ($3*) at every turn. There is depth and meaning to every encounter and story line that will pull you in and keep you enraptured.

There where some things here and there that didn't make sense to me so that made it a 4 star review. Why I gave it 3? Because is in first person POV and I hate that.

Interesting....but cute.

When I read a cherub (aka Cupid) falls for the Angel of death...I wasn't so sure how it would turn out. It did turn out okay, different then I'm use to from Selena, but not bad. I do like how you can feel the emotions, love, hopefulness, sadness, dispare and excitement. At times you feel for the little Cupid girl, like this is all you do? No wonder you feel like your missing something, you can feel how bored she gets with her job. But the Angel of death does bring excitement to her, and I guess adventure. It's a cute read, I will tell you it's different, but a good different. It's nice to get something different and makes you think...what if all of this was real, would it be like that? Is that how love goes?
You got to read it for yourself, good book!

I wasn't really sure about the installment in the Divine Vampires series but it got my attention from the start. Muriel is a cherub that is a cupid and the toll of finding love for others is making her think of things she shouldn't. One night she meets the angel of death when she is about to make her shot and everything changes for her. Chariel is the angel of death and he shows himself to Muriel on that fateful night. Their chemistry is amazing. Their love is forbidden and in this story you get to see what they will do to be with each other. This isn't your usual love story but its definitely a must read. If you haven't read this series you really should you won't regret it.

Unclear Who the Intended Audience Is

If you are an ESL (English as a Second Language) learner looking for a handy list of words that you ought to have in your vocabulary, then you might find this book to be useful. If you are writing a paper for school, or a report for work, you could also get something out of it. The question is, how much will it help you?

WHAT'S IN THERE?
----------------------------------
Most of the words are rather basic. So, it would seem to be geared toward language learners. Yet, the entries are written at a relatively high level. They begin with fairly standard dictionary definitions for the word, followed (in some cases) with explanations of usage, and related words/phrases.

DOES THIS APPROACH WORK?
----------------------------------
This approach works well for a word like "rapid" on page 103, where the author has the example sentence "There has been a rapid rise in sales." Not so well for "sanguine" on page 112, where the author has the example sentence "He is sanguine about the remorseless advance of information." I have used the word sanguine in conversation before, but I can think of many other words that I would recommend mastering instead if you are at a level where "rapid" is causing you difficulty.

WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?
----------------------------------
A book of 1001 words at the same level as "rapid" for a language learner would be great. A book of 1001 words at the same level as "sanguine" for a college student or a person in business would be great. This book is an ungainly mix of the two. There are other books that address both audiences better.

First, I would recommend you consider buying this book for the fantastic lists of words at the back (pages 147-166). Then, take a look at the following works. They are arranged from basic to advanced:
-Cobuild English Language Dictionary 2nd Edition: Helping Learners with Real English (Cobuild Series): Impressive reference work for language learners. Armed with the list of words from this book, you should be able to make good use of the dictionary. I think it has something to offer native English speakers as well, so it is worth a look.
-Choose the Right Word: Second Edition: Good for language learners AND businesspeople/students (all of us?). I think it is more successful than this book at addressing the needs of both audiences.
-The Synonym Finder: It lacks explanations and usage examples, so it is probably most appropriate for those with a high level of English language ability. I feel that the entries are far more helpful than those in a regular thesaurus.
-The Thinker's Thesaurus: Sophisticated Alternatives to Common Words (Expanded Second Edition): Good for anyone who wants to make the jump from a high level of English language usage to an advanced one. You may be using the word "intercourse" in your everyday speech and writing, but what about "houghmagandy," tribadism," "venery," or "intromission?" Consider this book a step-up from your regular thesaurus.

This book is, to put it mildly, incredible. Mathis tackles relevant themes (such as femininity, power, and the interplay between the two) while remaining loyal to lyricism. The vulnerability in this work is unparalleled; Mathis does not hesitate to make readers uncomfortable, to challenge common conceptions of what it means to be feminine, what it means to deal with mental illness, what it means to exist without hardness despite pain. I believe this should be required reading for everyone who is currently coming of age, who has ever resented their capacity to feel, who is interested in supporting queer feminist art, or who enjoys poetry that is going to have a lasting impact. You won't regret this purchase.

The best recreation of Hayek's thought available

Friedrich von Hayek has had perhaps the most profound impact of any political theorist in the last half-century. John Gray's book is a superb analysis of his ideas. Where other studies can be confusing or convoluted, Gray's always maintains its ability to lucidly recreate Hayek's arguments from their intellectual roots upwards.
Understanding the intellectual foundations of Hayek's work, can be a minefield of inaccessible terms and confusing statements. Thanks to John Gray, however, these matters are clearly and intelligently explained. The result is that the reader is provided with a rich insight into how Hayek's political economy functions. More than just a critique of socialism, Hayek's thought is also a profound intellectual statement combining the epistemological insights of Hume with Kant's categorical imperative. An understanding of its philosophical basis allows a fertile gaze into the prism that is Hayek's thought. Only Gray explains these aspects of his writngs clearly.
"Hayek on Liberty" is, moreover, refreshingly objective, despite the controversy which Hayek's ideas generate. Gray seeks to explain rather than to refute or praise. The reader can therefore take the insights Gray offers in a number of directions. Although Gray clearly admires Hayek, he does not feel the need to indulge in the monotonous hero-worship to which we have become accustomed. There is much to be found here for Hayek's critics too. Especially since it is doubtful that Hayek's use of Hume does not undermine many of his more positive political statements.
Gray's work is thus an invaluable guide to one of the Twentieth Century's intellectual icons. One only has to observe the saint-like worship Hayek has received in recent months, surrounding the centenery of his birth, to appreciate that his legacy is an ongoing phenomenon of global proportions. Academic, student, and interested observer will find Gray's study immensely helpful as a platform for approaching more general disussions of Hayek's ideas, of which many fine examples now exist. Anyone attempting a detailed appreciation of Hayek should thus keep Gray beside them at all times.

Definitely worth more than a single read

The shear volume of work completed by Hayek over a publishing career that marked more than fifty years makes it quite difficult to grasp the interlocking system of ideas he advocated. Gray has done an exceptional job of synthesizing this work. He presents the philosophical roots of Hayek's thought, the unique 20th century context in which Hayek's ideas competed with others, and a magnificent critique that anyone interested in Hayek should study.
Essentially, Gray reduces Hayek's contribution to that of a critic of socialism. Hayek's assertion that socialized central planning was an "epistemological impossibility," while historically evident, provides an inadequate justification for the 19th century form of capitalism Hayek advocated. The post-communist 21st century must deal with competing capitalisms, not rigid centrally planned economies, and Gray considers Hayek inadequate on this score.
Gray believes that Hayek missed an essential aspect of free market capitalism, that is, the power of progress. Free markets demand change, even change for change's sake, and the metaphor of a "spontaneous social order" arising in some sort of social evolution is not adequate to provide support for the traditional values and institutions for which Hayek had regard. Personal autonomy will always present a danger to social cohesion. In Gray's view, the free market advocated by Hayek prefers the former to the latter.
To Gray this weakness in Hayek's thought is fatal, and I tend to agree.

Slightly disappointing

I read this primarily wanting to get some handle on Hayek's work and I feel that it did help me, but that it was a book strangely behind its time. Its discussion of computation seemed unaware of the work going on as some of the criticisms of Dreyfus et. al. were in the process of being addressed, e.g., with Phil Agre's work on Pengi and Brooks' subsumption architecture -- although, admittedly some of this work was cotemporal with the writing of the book.

Similarly, as soon as I read the game theory comments I found myself asking: "well how does 'tit for tat' fit in", but 'tit for tat' never seemed to be addressed even though the work was known long before the book was published.

I found these oversights problematic, since they seemed to constitute one of the cores of the argument. They also hit one of my frustrations: the characterization that computation requires everything to be spelled out in exact detail. This is true for some systems some times, but does not completely cover the computational space.

I would have also liked to have seen a more detailed exposition of what appeared to be an anti-statistics stance on Hayek's part-- another aspect that seemed core and which, in my mind, required more grounding.

That said, it was a interesting book, the reviews just seem more favorable than justified, but Hayek is a polarizing figure.

He spends the rest of the day looking for the elusive noise in a number of interesting, but ultimately unproductive places, such as the toilet, the cupboard, the clock, and the washing machine. His purr at last surfaces with the reappearance of his family. A cat needs his ``. . . openers of cans . . . pourers of cream . . . strokers of fur . . .'' to be really content. Coxon's watercolor illustrations are lavish and detailed, making skillful use of white highlights and small brush strokes. Bootle certainly looks strokable, but the paintings are strongly reminiscent of calendar or greeting-card art, and the artist is much less at home with human faces (the boy looks a bit squashed) than she is with animals and plants (or even the interior of a refrigerator). The text occasionally relies on some too cute wordplay. Boodle's in a Jam!

This delight,warm tale shall please adults and children alike. The lush, intricate illustrations feature the cat seeking his purr in different rooms. One hilarious panel depicts Boodle staring fixedly inside a toilet hoping the purr will pop back up, LOL.
The story itself unfolds neatly, is well paced for all its briefness, and includes a few cozy panels of young owner feeding his pet, holding an adoring Boodles in a headlock while doing homework.
Highly recommend this as gift to anyone who is amused by felines' antics, or for children.

Cute little book

My wife set this tiny little book in front of me a while ago. It's an illustrated children's book about a cat who goes in search of his lost purr, making a total wreck of his house as he does so. Of course, his owner comes up, whereupon he immediately finds his purr. We gloss a bit over what the owner thought of the state of the house. Nice illustrations, particularly when the cat's looking goofy.
