Loved the chapter on the RAAF. This book is excellent. - Burt Rutan, aerospace engineer, designer of Voyager ...an easy, entertaining and informative read. That is a difficult combination to achieve. - Richard Fernandez, the Belmont Club Our shortcomings in terms of defence effort and expenditure are highlighted in this book. - Robert Pearce AM RFD CStJ Cit WA, Colonel RAAMC (Retd) Now that China's brazen menace has forced Japan to amend its constitution to be able to rearm and fight abroad, Australia remains the pivot of the Western alliance system down under. - Professor Marek Chodakiewicz, Institute of World Politics The force of his arguments is inexorable and presents a dark and chilling view of the future, but, like Cassandra, he will never be believed? -John C Rice, Historian. We should be taking the Chinese at their word. When they say they will seize the Senkaku islands from Japan, then they will be attacking Japan. When say they are going to seize the South China Sea, then they will be killing Vietnamese, Filipinos, Indonesians and Malaysians to do so. When China says that they will be having a war with the United States in a Götterdämmerung that will decide who rules the world thereafter, then another world war is coming. They have said all those things. It is time for Australia to awake from its torpor and prepare for what is coming. We need more submarines and quickly. The F-35 will be shot out of the sky, but there is a better alternative. This book explains all.

A sober analysis and a passionate call to arms
By Stephen Harper
This book is jam-packed full of facts and figures, some of it very detailed and probably particularly of interest to the specialist reader, and some of it is more general and more accessible. But all of it is compelling. The author makes the case that circumstances right now are not ‘normal’; and that a war is looming menacingly on the horizon for an ill-prepared Australia. This is what makes the book an attractive read for the general reader.
I would hazard a guess that most ordinary people would have little or no knowledge of the nature, extent and reach of Australia’s defence forces. Well, having a quality armed force contingent is just like having a comprehensive house insurance policy. You don’t realise just how much you need the insurance policy until the house burns down; but when the house does burn down the home owner quickly pulls out their insurance policy to see what’s in it and whether they are covered. Reading this book is akin to reading your house insurance policy – except the ‘house’ in this case is the whole country of Australia. Are we adequately insured? Not even close, according to the author.
If you have ever wondered exactly what Australia’s defence capability is then this book will tell you. It looks at all manner of military equipment whether it’s for land, sea or air. There is an analysis of Australia’s present defence capabilities, what the author considers our capabilities should be, and a study of potential equipment purchase options to remedy shortfalls.
In particular, the author focuses on submarines (which is a political hot potato at the moment) and fighter jets. Some forthright recommendations are made in respect of potential submarine purchases – none of which bow before the populist ‘let’s-make-them-in-Australia-no-matter-the-cost’ make-work option so beloved of some politicians.
There’s an extended section on fighter planes where the author makes an impassioned plea for Australia to dump the planned mega-purchase of Lockheed Martin F35s jets and instead go for Saab’s Gripen E fighter. The case is comprehensive and persuasive with a series of statistical comparisons that make the F35 look like a dog and the cheaper Gripen look like a relative bargain that’s just the ticket. The book may be worth the price of entry just for this fascinating discussion alone.
And fascinating is the apposite word to describe the section on China’s ambitions in the south China Sea and the Western Pacific and the coming war that the author foresees. China’s huge military construction program on various reclaimed reefs in the South China Sea is not being done for the fun of it. And the potential war would not be much fun for the countries whom China has in its sights. This is a potential war that is not on the radar of the media nor the public at large. Comfortingly, there is a thorough and credible section in the book’s appendix on how China can be defeated by focusing on debilitating their energy sources.
There is also a section on the dire state of Australia’s energy security and a discussion on how using Coal-to-Liquids technology could save Australia. If the facts and figures quoted in this section are accurate (which I have no reason to doubt) then Australia is in for a tough time if things get tough, war-wise.
I have no specialist knowledge of the defence industry and am merely an interested observer, so I cannot comment with authority as to the veracity of some of the claims made. However, the arguments presented are comprehensive and persuasive. I have learned a great deal about a subject that has hitherto been rather opaque to me. I feel like I now have some clue as to where Australia stands in the Defence game. It doesn’t look good. Read the book, see if you agree with this analysis, and if you do then it’s maybe time to rattle a few cages in Canberra. A recommended read.

Australia's Defence - Great read
By Amazon Customer
It was a great read. I am astonished at the depth and breadth of David’s research.
I do hope that our Minister for Defence will read the book carefully and digest its message before spending those billions of dollars she reputedly has to spend on toys such as aircraft, ships, submarines and tanks.
