Reinforced by aristocratic collectors who made the Grand Tour of Europe’s Classical sites, this Neoclassical style found mature expression in Antonio Canova’s sculptures and in the paintings of Jacques-Louis David, whose tributes to Roman republican virtues helped fuel French revolutionary fervor.

An outstanding handbook and reference

This book is an excellent resource for eighteenth-century art history. It is almost impossible to find a textbook on this subject that is not devoted to one country or medium (such as painting or architecture). This work is the only one I've found that is truly comprehensive of European art in this period, and its only drawback is that each artist and topic are considered so briefly (two or three pages) that you are left wanting more. The text provides a clearly written summary of each entry, and the illustrations are first-rate. Teachers should be aware that each illustration has black lines connecting to the author's comments, and this will make it difficult to have digital scans made for classroom use, since the images will have the lines or else require many hours of photoshop to remove them. Overall, a very useful book at a very reasonable cost.

A feast for the eyes

This book is a great bargain. A paperback, it's small enough to take with you to Europe. Yet it's also lavish with color pictures of some of the world's most glorious art. And that's not all, it's also well written and very comprehensive, covering not only the history of art but architecture as well.
The seventeenth century saw an explosion in the number of great artists such as Rubens, van Dyck, Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Carravaggio. The dynamism and curved lines marked a sharp turn from the art of the past.
The book discusses the various movements in art and architecture, with wonderful examples of each. About a third of the book contains a short biography of all the famous artists and shows examples of their art.

Great book but...

I love the Getty topical series and bought this because it is such a a great general overview of 18th Century Art. I was however surprised and disappointed that room could not be found for such important artists as Pater, Oudry, Rigaud, and Flaxman, not to mention Stubbs and Bouchardon. So while it is a wonderful handy reference I can only give it 4 stars.
