Wow that was freaking hot I wanted to touch myself, And reading how Rachel rode Nicholas made it even hotter. This was freak fantastic, had to hold my legs tightly together that's how hot it was love every minute of it.

Wow! What a pleasure to read.

I think I'm a little in love with Riyria. Not in a weird, "Twilight moms" kind of way (although I'm sure both Hadrian and Royce are "totally hawt" or whatever the current trying-too-hard hip terminology might be.) I mean I'm in love with this kind of story. I love the swashbuckling action. I love the banter, even if it gets a little anachronistic. Then again, I loved the "Taming of the Shrew" episode of Moonlighting, and I'm pretty sure Bill Shakespeare didn't include a cover of The Rascals "Good Lovin'" in his original vision.

In other words, yes, I think the author is winking at us a little with some of that dialogue. (Example: Hadrian, upon looking at a tower that Royce has inadvertently destroyed: "I love what you've done with the place.") I'm okay with it because it makes me laugh. And I'm dead tired of fantasy that takes itself deadly serious. Reading is supposed to be FUN, guys. At least, it's not supposed to be so depressing you consider taking a leisurely bubble bath with your toaster by the end.

The worldbuilding is so nicely done, borrowing enough from the common vernacular of fantasy that you don't feel like you need to read with a decoder ring, but throwing some interesting original bits in as well. This book was just a joy to read. While the stakes felt high, and a lot of violence and corruption is implied, it doesn't ever become bleak and hopeless. There's a strong vein of optimism throughout, something sadly missing from the urban fantasy I've been reading lately.

I'm hoping the rest of the series is as strong as the first two books included in this volume. I'll definitely be picking them up soon.

I really wanted to like this series

I really wanted to like this series. It was given to me as a gift, and I was hopeful that a self-published author could pull off something great with these novels. Unfortunately, the result is a cliched, boring, and poorly written story. Completely uninteresting protagonists, less-than-two-dimensional side characters (only two of whom are women, and just absolutely terribly-written women at that), dialog that is nothing short of cringeworthy, an inconsistent and trite setting, and obscenely repetitive story structure. The dialog is a weird mix of modern English and what a modern English-speaker would think a medieval character might sound like. Within the first hundred pages you'll be presented with every fantasy trope in existence as if on a conveyor belt. There's nothing original about this story; if you've read any fantasy before, feel free to skip this. Many reviews talk about this series as "light", like it's a synonym for dull. This series would be great for a pre-teen just getting into the genre, maybe who has struggled with reading in the past...not so much for anyone else. If you want some lighthearted, fast-paced high fantasy that actually does something original and appears to have gone through at least a modicum of professional editing, go read a series like The Kingkiller Chronicles.

I'm not sure why my main review from goodreads and my blog didn't go through but I think it might have been too long. lol. I will keep this one short.

I got introduced to this author by friends reading the newest book "Age of Myth" on goodreads and I loved it. So I have been picking up his books so I can read all of the older ones and THIS book blew me away! It's one of my favorite books now.

I love Hadrian and Royce, I love the world and people that are in the books. The two books in this volume are amazing. The men get framed into a killing they didn't commit against the king. But the princess helps them and in return they help her with the prince and finding the real killer.

The second book has people from the first book and some more evil people and dark magic.

This is a wonderful world of magic, fighting, strong friendships and a few tears. As I have said, I love it and I hope more people will too :-)

About the Author
Robert Barton is Professor Emeritus of Acting at the University of Oregon. He has directed more than half of Shakespeare's plays and performed in most of them, including playing the title role in a PBS production of HAMLET. A prolific author, Dr. Barton has published numerous scholarly articles on acting and seven books, including VOICE: ONSTAGE AND OFF (with Rocco Dal Vera), THEATRE IN YOUR LIFE and LIFE THEMES (both with Annie McGregor), and ACTING REFRAMES. His STYLE FOR ACTORS received the Theatre Association's Best Book Award. In addition, he served as editor and adaptor of the newly revised edition of the classic text THE CRAFT OF COMEDY. The American College Theatre Festival honored Dr. Barton as Outstanding Acting Coach. He received his Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University.

Annie McGregor teaches script analysis and history/literature/criticism at The Pennsylvania State University School of Theatre, where she is currently Head of the BA Theatre program. She has received the Atherton Award for Teaching Excellence and the College of Arts and Architecture Award for Teaching Excellence. She is a sometime actor, with her most recent and most favorite role being Jean in "After Mrs. Rochester," at the University of Oregon in its West Coast premiere. She is a regular dramaturg; her most recent projects include "Mother Courage and Her Children" and "Pentecost." She is increasingly intrigued by the world of online teaching, after the successful launch and continued success of her Art of the Theatre web course. She also continues to direct projects, with her latest offerings being "The Odyssey" and "Arabian Nights," both by her favorite playwright Mary Zimmerman.

A good resource for building your space ship model kits

This book will give you many tips and ideas for building and displaying space ship model kits. The pictures and text are good. Intermediate to advanced modelling skills are needed to build the kits this book. This is a second edition with articles about kits from Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Gallactica, and the U.S. space program. I'd like to see a third edition with more kits from Star Wars, Trek, and also Lost in Space and Babylon 5.

This book is geared more towards the modeler with a little more experience. There are many great models to look at. I am an avid Trekkie and purchased it for this purpose but found myself in awe with the other models presented. The one I liked best was the Lighted Enterprise D. Abe

Nowhere Near The "Bible" of Bread Machines

I'm not at all satisfied with this book. It contains only a handful of white and wheat bake-in-the-machine recipes, which are what I was looking for a variety of. The majority of the recipes require hand-shaping and baking in a conventional oven. Why would I have bought a bread machine if I wanted to do that? Here's a breakdown of the book's chapters:

1. "Basic & Everyday Breads" - only 16 of the 34 recipes are baked in the machine. Less than half! I have to add that the book is extremely heavy on the herb and cheese breads. I don't like these types of bread at all, and they occupy a significant portion of the book. Only 17 of these 34 so-called basic breads do not call for herbs and/or cheese.
2. "Basic & Everyday Rolls" - all baked out of machine
3. "Flat Breads" - all baked out of machine
4. "Quick Breads" - baked in the machine but mixed by hand (again something I, as a bread machine user, would not want to do)
5. "Specialty and Festive Breads" - all but one are hand-shaped and baked in conventional oven
6. "Loaf Cakes and Baked Goods" - none of these are machine-only
7. "Gluten Free Breads" - all mixed outside of the machine

For the sake of fairness, the Basic White Bread recipe (first in book) is the best bread machine recipe I've made in the past couple years, and the book contains a few more recipes I know I'll try, but it is SOOOO far from being a comprehensive bread machine user's book. With only partial reliance on the machine for most of the recipes, this would've been better as a breadmaker's book, without the "machine" in the title. And even then, it's no bible. For that, I'd recommend Beth Hensperger's "The Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook".

misrepresented

I thought all the recipes were from start to finish in the breadmaker. Most of them lead you only through the dough cycle, and then you have to let it rise again, shape loaves, rise again, etc. Beautiful photography. Needs more trouble shooting tips. Recipes are good, though. Have only tried a few recipes so far.

2nd Hand Machine missing instruction book

First used this book, The Bread Machine Bible, from my local library. The Bread Basics in the beginning of Anne Sheasby's book is most helpful. I hadn't made bread in decades and then it was w/o a bread machine.
After trying a few recipes, I knew I wanted to own the book.
The banana & honey loaf is the biggest hit with the grandchildren, so far.

You would think that by the 14th novel in a series, an author might become a bit bored with his characters, a bit sloppy in his writing. Thankfully, Lawrence Block is no such writer. Matt Scudder, in his 14th appearance, is as sharp and entertaining as he is in such mysteries as Eight Million Ways to Die and A Dance at the Slaughterhouse. Scudder is one of the few dicks out there with a fully fleshed-out personality; he's not insensitive to the mayhem around him, and his fears are well founded and realistic. After all, as the title boldly states, we live in a world where everybody dies.

Settled into married life, sober, and finally a legit private eye (the state granted his license), Scudder is prepared to become a respectable high-priced detective working for New York City lawyers. But when his old buddy, Mick Ballou, comes to him because two of his runners end up murdered, Scudder finds himself sinking back into the muck of the underworld. While dodging thugs who are out to put a stop to his investigation, Scudder must figure out who has it in for Ballou.

The writing in this novel is elegant--equally supple in describing the gibbous moon as it is in sorting out Scudder's feelings on the murder of a close friend, or when recounting a rather gory eye plucking. The dialogue is snappy and true to life. Lawrence Block once again proves he's worthy of the title Grand Master of Mystery. So be sure to set aside a chunk of time before you sit down to read this novel, because you're not going to be able to tear yourself away. --Jenny Brown

The body count is indeed high in this latest Matt Scudder tale, which is also the best since A Walk Among the Tombstones (1993)?resonant, thoughtful, richly textured and capped by a slam-bang windup. At the center of the case is Matt's old buddy, Mick Ballou, the murderous and hard-drinking Irish mobster with a deeply philosophical streak who is one of Block's most enduring creations. Two of Mick's henchmen have been killed in what should have been a routine liquor hijacking. After Scudder helps Mick bury the bodies at the mobster's upstate farm, he finds he has been targeted himself. Two hoods try to rough him up on the street, then an old friend, Matt's sponsor at Alcoholics Anonymous, is gunned down in a restaurant after being mistaken for Matt. It soon becomes clear that someone from Ballou's past is aiming to destroy him, and Matt, caught in the crossfire, has to try to determine who's behind the mayhem. He does so in his usual ruminative way, working it out with wife Elaine, streetwise sidekick TJ and old cop comrades who are now, because of his friendship with Ballou, against him. In the end, Matt has to stand alone with Ballou to put a stop to the vendetta in a blaze of gunfire. Block's seamless weave of thought and action, and his matchless gift for dialogue that is true, funny and revealing, have seldom been on more effective display. The pages leading up to the climax have an almost Shakespearean feel for human resignation in the face of mortality.

The prolific Block (e.g., Tanner on Ice, LJ 7/98) is well known among mystery fans for two series: one featuring Bernie Rhodenbarr and the other Matthew Scudder. This is the 14th Scudder tale, and by now the recovering alcoholic ex-cop has become respectable, with a wife and a PI license. When his best friend, an Irish gangster, finds himself the target of an unknown assassin, Scudder begins asking questions and soon joins the hit list as bodies begin to turn up. As usual, Block shows that actions have consequences?past events come back with a vengeance, and Scudder's interior conflicts drive the series. The dialog is unusually stiff, but Block has won nearly every mystery award, his fans are legion, and any new Scudder story is sure to be in demand everywhere.

a worthy entry in a great series

I read "Everybody Dies" in a single sitting, and was as involved in the story as I have been in any of Block's previous Scudder novels. I certainly think that this book is an improvement over the last couple of stories, which lacked intensity and the edgy, fascinating Scudder we have grown used to. While "Everybody Dies" may ultimately lack the haunting power of the best entries in the series--for my money, "Eight Million Ways to Die," "When the Sacred Ginmill Closes," and "A Dance at the Slaughterhouse," it has some of the same grim intensity as those books. At their best, Block's Scudder novels almost enter the horror genre--he walks a fine line between mystery, suspense, and outright terror. No one does this as well as he does. Block seems to be consciously trying to go back to what made his series work so well in this volume--adding much more violence, raising the personal stakes for Scudder tremendously over the last couple of books, and having him explicitly reject the professional "respectablility" that somewhat alienated many of his longtime fans, I think, in the last couple of books. A minor criticism might be that we never get to encounter the main villain directly, but the action in the final sequence is so explosive and riveting that I didn't even realize that until later. Keep up the good work, Mr. Block.

Even Death Brings No Peace

Block's character, Matthew Scudder, is loyal to a fault (as usual) and becomes entangled in a life or death battle with yet unknown enemies of his old pal, Mick Ballou. Mick's violent past and penchant for murder have never stopped Scudder from spending quality time with him but never before has he been paired with him in a situation that he knew would require the taking of lives. Some person, or persons, are after Mick and it soon becomes evident that it is personal and not part of the shady business world in which Mick flourishes. The book opens on a dark note, i.e. the burial of two of Mick's murdered "employees" in an upstate farm acreage by Scudder and Mick and, as the story unwinds, their murders mark the beginning of a blood feud like no other. The author does a fine job of giving the reader just enough insight and information to solve the mystery right along with the characters - but the surprises are there just the same. I think this is the best of the Scudder series....and that is saying something.

Even Block's 'less than best' is better than most

There are no bad Matthew Scudder books. While I agree thatEverybody Dies is not as good as some of the previous Scudder books,Lawrence Block on any bad day can out write almost anyone else doing this kind of thing. There is a familiarity of place, character and action about these books that always satisfies. The writing is spare and evocative and seems perfectly tuned to the violence and the moral ambiguity of the world that Scudder inhabits.
I don't know what others sense as lacking in this book, and I doubt that I can put my own impressions clearly, but it seems that as Scudder's domestic scene has become more stable, some edge has been lost from the character. I think I liked it better when his woman was still turning tricks and he seemed more lost and unhappy. It added a dimension to the stories that I miss.
Nevertheless, I will continue to read Block's Scudder series as long as he wants to turn them out. They are a fine way to pass a few hours
